2023 Pride Watchlist: Film and Specials

In 2023, it's clear that the entertainment industry has made tremendous strides in representing LGBTQIA+ individuals on screen. We've come a long way since the days when queer characters were relegated to supporting roles or used as mere plot devices. Now, LGBTQIA+ actors and filmmakers are taking the reins and telling their own stories, bringing a richness and authenticity to the screen that was once sorely lacking. In celebration of Pride, we’ve compiled a list of five films and specials that are of the community, by the community, and for the community. Enjoy! 

Carol (2015) 
Dir. Todd Haynes  

Synopsis: Set in 1950s New York City, this romantic drama depicts the relationship between a young aspiring photographer and an older woman going through a divorce as they navigate societal pressures and personal obstacles to be together.

A Single Man (2009) 
Dir. Tom Ford 

Synopsis: Based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood, this drama follows a day in the life of a gay college professor in 1960s Los Angeles, grappling with the recent death of his partner.

Do I Sound Gay? (2014) 
Dir. David Thorpe 

Synopsis: This documentary explores the stereotype of the "gay voice" and its effect on the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as one filmmaker’s personal journey to embrace his own voice.

Wanda Sykes: Not Normal (2019) 
Dir. Linda Mendoza 

Synopsis: In her 2019 comedy special, this legendary American comedian tackles a wide range of political and social issues with her characteristic wit and humor, including racism, sexism, and the #MeToo movement.

Margaret Cho: psyCHO (2015) 
Dir. John Asher 

Synopsis: In her hilarious 2015 comedy special, Cho covers a range of personal and political topics in her signature candid and provocative style, from her family life and relationships to issues of race, gender, and sexuality.
