2023 Pride Watchlist: Television

The television industry has made tremendous strides in accurately portraying LGBTQIA+ individuals on screen, often leading the charge for fresh takes and new perspectives. Today’s queer TV characters are complex, multifaceted individuals with rich inner lives and stories that are worth telling. No longer on the sidelines, these characters are being given prominent roles and storylines that are integral to the overall plot. To honor and celebrate Pride, we have compiled a list of five outstanding television shows that honor the LGBTQIA+ community. Enjoy! 

Absolutely Fabulous (1992) 
BBC 

Synopsis: This classic British sitcom is adored by the LGBTQIA+ community, thanks to an affinity for its two lead characters. The show follows the hilarious misadventures of Edina Monsoon and her best friend Patsy Stone, two middle-aged, chain-smoking, champagne-swilling women, as they navigate the fashion and media industries in London while trying to maintain their glamorous lifestyle.

Schitt’s Creek (2015) 
CBC Television 

Synopsis: Popular with the community due to a collection of queer writers, actors, storylines, and a beautiful inclusive message, this Canadian sitcom follows the wealthy Rose family who lose their fortune and are forced to live in a small town they once bought as a joke.

Synopsis: This television drama explores ball culture in New York City during the late 1980s and early 1990s, as well as the African American and Latino LGBTQIA+ community, tackling themes of identity, family, and discrimination.

Please Like Me (2013)

Synopsis: This Australian comedy-drama series follows the life of Josh, a twenty-something gay man, as he navigates through relationships, mental health issues, family struggles, and coming-of-age experiences with his close friends and eccentric family.

Heartstopper (2022)

Synopsis: Based on the popular graphic novel, this British romantic drama series follows the love story between two teenage boys, Charlie and Nick, as they navigate their feelings for each other, deal with homophobia, and try to find their place in the world.
