On Apr. 24, 2019, the Dallas City Council voted to approve a paid sick leave law. The law makes Dallas the third city in the state of Texas to pass a paid sick leave law, following Austin and San Antonio. Under the new law, employees who work at least 80 hours per year in Dallas are entitled to paid sick leave. Paid sick leave accrues at a rate of one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at 64 hours per year for employers with 16 or more employees and 48 hours per year for employers with 15 or fewer employers. Leave may be used for absences due to an employee or family member’s illness, injury or health condition, or for certain instances related to stalking, domestic abuse or sexual assault. The law is scheduled to go into effect Aug. 1, 2019, though legal challenges to similar ordinances in Austin and San Antonio leave the fate of the Dallas law unclear at this time.
