1. Problemista (2024)

Synopsis: Alejandro is an ambitious immigrant from El Salvador who arrives in New York City with dreams of becoming a toy designer. As his work visa nears expiration, he finds himself taking a job assisting an unpredictable and difficult art-world misfit. Through Alejandro’s struggles, the film poignantly portrays the harsh realities and bureaucratic hurdles that non-U.S. residents face when trying to live and work legally in America, blending surreal comedy with social commentary.

2. Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Synopsis: This dark fantasy, set in post-Civil War Spain, follows the journey of Ofelia, a young girl who discovers a mysterious labyrinth near her new home. As she escapes into a world of mythical creatures and dangerous quests, she must fulfill three tasks to prove she is the reincarnation of an ancient princess. Meanwhile, her reality is fraught with danger, as her cruel stepfather, a fascist captain, enforces his brutal rule. 3. Roma (2018)

Synopsis: This film offers a poignant and visually stunning portrayal of life in 1970s Mexico City. 4. The House of the Spirits (1993)

Synopsis: the Trueba family, led by Esteban, a wealthy and domineering rancher, and his clairvoyant wife, Clara. Set in South America during a period of political turmoil, the story spans decades, tracing the family's intense relationships, buried secrets, and tragic fates. As revolution and social change sweep the nation, the Truebas must confront love, betrayal, and the lasting effects of their past. Blending history with elements of magical realism, the film delves into themes of power, loyalty, and the enduring presence of spirits that shape their lives.

5. La Misma Luna / Under the Same Moon (2007)

Synopsis: Carlitos is a young Mexican boy who crosses the border into the United States to reunite with his mother, who's been working there to support him. Separated by distance but connected through their shared dreams, Carlitos navigates the challenges of migration and survival as he makes his way across the desert. Meanwhile, his mother faces her own struggles as she works tirelessly to build a better future for her family. The heartfelt film explores themes of hope, determination, and the powerful bond between mother and child, while exploring the sacrifices of Latino immigrants fighting to come to the States.
