2024 Pride Month Watchlist: Television

In 2024, the television industry is embracing unprecedented LGBTQIA+ representation, with diverse creators and characters leading the charge. Major networks and platforms are investing in inclusive storytelling, fostering acceptance and understanding while celebrating the vibrant queer community. This transformative era heralds a future of optimism and opportunity for LGBTQIA+ representation on television. To commemorate Pride, we’ve compiled a list of five television series that honor the occasion. Enjoy! 

1. Sense8 (2015) 
Netflix 

Synopsis: This show from the Wachowskis follows the lives of eight individuals from different parts of the world who suddenly find themselves mentally and emotionally connected, able to share each other's experiences, skills, and emotions. As they navigate this newfound connection, they must also confront a mysterious organization hunting them down, while grappling with personal struggles, relationships, and the diverse cultures they represent. Through their bond, they discover the power of empathy, unity, and love in overcoming adversity and shaping their interconnected destinies.

2. Feud: Capote vs the Swans (2024) 
FX 

Synopsis: This show from the mind of Ryan Murphy delves into the real-life rivalry between iconic author Truman Capote and the glamorous socialite "swans" of high society in the 1950s and 60s. Focused on Capote's tumultuous relationships with influential figures like Babe Paley, Slim Keith, and Gloria Guinness, the series explores the complexities of jealousy, ambition, and betrayal amidst the glittering backdrop of New York City's elite social circles. As Capote gains fame with his groundbreaking work In Cold Blood, his alliances with the Swans unravel, leading to a dramatic clash of egos and loyalties that forever alters the landscape of literature and society.

3. Fellow Travelers (2023) 
Showtime 

Synopsis: This historical drama follows the tumultuous romance between two men against the backdrop of 1950s McCarthy-era Washington, D.C. As they navigate the perilous political landscape of anti-communist fervor and the so-called Lavender Scare, their secret relationship faces constant threats from all sides. The series delves into the personal and professional struggles of those trying to find happiness and authenticity in an oppressive era.

4.Veneno (2020) 
Atresplayer Premium 

Synopsis: This is the story of Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez, better known as La Veneno, a transgender icon and television personality in Spain. The series intertwines two timelines: one chronicling Cristina's rise to fame in the 1990s and another that looks at the present day, where a young journalism student named Valeria discovers and documents Cristina's life. Through their relationship, the series explores themes of gender identity, the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, and the impact of La Veneno's legacy on Spanish culture.

5. Special (2019)

Synopsis: In this heartfelt comedy-drama, Ryan, a young gay man with cerebral palsy, decides to break free from his sheltered life and pursue his dreams.
