As we noted in our Spring 2018 Update, additions to New York City’s Earned Sick Time Act will require employers to provide protected time off for employees who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking or human trafficking.
The newly renamed “Earned Safe & Sick Time Act” does not change the amount of time an employee can take off under the law, but expands permissible reasons for leave. The amendments also include privacy protections for employees who take time off as protected “safe time.” Along with other employer duties, the new law requires that employers notify employees of their rights under the law by June 4, 2018 or at time of hire, whichever is later.
The amendments go into effect May 5, 2018.
