Expanded Sexual Harassment Protection in Connecticut

On Jun. 18, 2019, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed into law An Act Combatting Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment, which imposes training and posting requirements on Connecticut employers aimed at reducing sexual harassment in the workplace. Under the law, all Connecticut employers must provide sexual harassment training to supervisors within six months of hire or assumption of supervisory duties; all Connecticut employers with at least three employees must provide sexual harassment training to all employees within six months of hire. Among other requirements, the training must include information on federal and state laws governing sexual harassment and information on the remedies available to victims of sexual harassment. The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities is expected to develop and make available to employers a free, online training and education video to fulfill the bill’s training requirements. Employees must be trained by Oct. 1, 2020. In addition to the training component -- no later than three months after an employee's new hire -- employers must provide notice to employees explaining the illegality of sexual harassment and remedies available to victims. The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities is expected to create a model policy that employers may use to satisfy this requirement.
