On Jan. 12, 2018, Maryland passed its first and long-disputed paid sick leave law. The bill came to fruition after the Maryland Senate voted to override Governor Larry Hogan’s previous veto of the bill. The new law requires Maryland employers with 15 or more employees to provide up to five days of paid sick leave per year, and employers with 14 or fewer employees to provide up to five days of unpaid sick leave per year. Sick leave is accrued over time, with employees earning one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. The new law goes into effect on Feb. 11, 2018.
