Your next production won't run exactly like your last one. The crew will change. A location might move. A new deal could add another approval, another labor question, or another deadline to an already crowded week.
That's why choosing between Cast & Crew and Entertainment Partners isn't just a software decision. You're choosing how your team will handle the everyday work—and who you'll turn to when production gets complicated.
Both belong on a production-finance shortlist. But the decision often comes down to something a feature comparison can't capture: when you need to talk an issue through, can you pick up the phone and reach someone who understands your production?
With Cast & Crew, that human connection is part of the relationship. You can speak with a real person, work through the details with an expert, and get guidance on the issue in front of you. It's a compelling reason to put Cast & Crew first.
EP is worth considering when its production tools match your workflow
Entertainment Partners markets a range of familiar production tools: SmartTime for digital timecards and hours-to-gross, SmartAccounting for production-cost management, and SmartPO +Payables for purchasing and payment workflows.
Its background-talent offering is also worth a look if finding, booking, managing, and paying background performers is central to your operation. EP highlights Casting Technology and SmartVoucher for those needs.
If those products fit the way your team already works, EP deserves consideration. The next question is what you need from the relationship beyond any one product.
Sometimes the most important feature is a person you can call
A payroll question doesn't always fit neatly into a help article. You may need to explain the deal, talk through a timecard, or understand how a labor requirement applies to your production.
In those moments, you don't just want information. You want a conversation with someone who understands what's at stake.
Cast & Crew gives you access to experts you can get on the phone to work through those questions. Whether you're sorting out a payroll issue, discussing a union or guild requirement, or navigating a production-finance question, the relationship isn't limited to what you can do inside the platform.
That personal experience is a key reason to choose Cast & Crew. Connected software matters, but so does being able to say, ‘Here's what's happening on our production,’ and talk through the next step with a real person.
When you're comparing providers, make that part of the conversation. Ask who you'll call, how you'll reach them, and how they'll help your team when the answer isn't straightforward. Your experience as a client deserves as much attention as the product demo.
Look at what happens between the steps
A timecard can be easy to enter and still create work downstream. An approved deal memo can be complete and still need to be entered somewhere else. Those handoffs are where your team feels the difference between having tools and having a workflow.
Cast & Crew gives you concrete connections to evaluate. Approved Start+ deal memos flow into payroll. Approved Hours+ timecards transmit into payroll, too. Hours+ supports union and guild timekeeping, including overtime, meal penalties, and allowances.
For you, the appeal is practical: less re-entry at those handoffs and a clearer path from the deal you've approved to the payroll you're preparing.
EP also promotes integrated finance workflows, so “connected” shouldn't be the deciding word on its own. Ask both providers to walk through one of your actual production scenarios. Cast & Crew's onboarding-to-payroll and timecard-to-payroll flows give you a useful place to start.
Give your accounting team more than another place to enter numbers
Your production accountant needs to manage costs, vendors, purchase orders, payments, and supporting paperwork—not simply close out payroll.
With Cast & Crew, PSL+ supports that production-accounting work, while DPO connects purchase-order and accounts-payable processes with PSL+. Invoice intake, approval routing, invoice-to-PO matching, and posting help carry the work through the accounting process.
Studio+ adds production document sharing, review, approvals, search, and access controls. Reporting+ lets your team configure and schedule reports across payroll, accounting, HR, and production data.
Instead of evaluating each feature in isolation, picture a busy week on your own show. Where does the invoice go? Who approves it? Where does the supporting document live? How does finance get the report it needs? That is the level at which Cast & Crew's approach becomes meaningful.
A client relationship that starts before the first payroll
That human support matters when you're switching providers, too. You want to know who is helping your team prepare, who owns the next step, and where to turn as questions come up.
Cast & Crew's transition approach includes implementation planning, a regular working cadence, production-specific training, and support coverage. It's a chance to build the working relationship alongside the technical setup—not wait until something needs attention.
For your accountant, producer, or finance team, that makes personal support part of the decision from the start.
Why Cast & Crew belongs at the top of your shortlist
If EP's tools align closely with your priorities, particularly background-talent workflows, they're worth exploring. But if you want connected payroll and accounting backed by a personal relationship with accessible experts, Cast & Crew makes a strong case for your first conversation.
The difference to prioritize isn't another box on a checklist. It's knowing you can call a real person and talk through the production issue you're facing.
With 50 years in entertainment, Cast & Crew brings industry knowledge to that relationship as well as technology. Its services span payroll, production accounting, labor relations, incentives, workers' compensation, safety, and risk management—giving you more to draw on as your production needs change.
You aren't choosing a partner for a feature checklist. You're choosing one for the production you're making now—and the ones you'll make next.
Start with a conversation. Contact Cast & Crew to talk through your next production and meet the people who can support your team.
