2023 Hispanic Heritage Month Watchlist: Television

As Hispanic Heritage Month continues, we want to look a little deeper at the compelling works celebrate the significance of the Hispanic community. After covering a set of diverse films in the first part of our watchlist series, we wanted to highlight five compelling television series that explore the richness of the Hispanic community.

Queen of the South (2016)
USA Network

Breakdown: Queen of the South is an adaptation of the Spanish novel La Reina del Sur, following Teresa Mendoza, a poor Mexican who amasses a great deal of power by building a drug empire. After fleeing from danger in Mexico, she enters the criminal world in the United States. Applying her unique approach to the drug trade, Teresa establishes her own successful organization, which puts her in the government’s crosshairs.

One Day at a Time (2017)

Breakdown: Penelope Alvarez, a U.S. Army veteran nurse, separates from her husband due to his PTSD-induced alcoholism. With her mother’s help, she raises her two children and navigates life's challenges. Dealing with sexuality and relationships, PTSD, addiction, citizenship issues, and more, the sitcom portrays the life of a Cuban American family.

Los Espookys (2019)
HBO

Breakdown: This delightful comedy, shot in Santiago, Chile, follows a group of horror enthusiasts who form a unique business, conjuring thrills and chills for their clientele. The friends attempt to turn their love of the genre into a success story by fabricating cinematic situations that people think are real.

Vida (2019)
Starz

Breakdown: Two Mexican American sisters are forced to return home to the Eastside of Los Angeles when they are confronted with the shocking truth about their mother’s identity. While wildly different people, the sisters try to band together with common purpose.
