Hollywood North: Filming in Canada Jumped 27% in 2022
Canada's local producers experienced a significant boost last year, owing to generous tax breaks. The number of foreign films produced in the country rose from 141 in the previous year to 171, with the total expenditure reaching an impressive $1.2 billion in U.S. dollars. The country also played host to some of the largest American TV productions, such as The Handmaid’s Tale, The Flash, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. However, despite this success, the total number of TV titles produced in Canada experienced a slight decline.

On Tuesday, an announcement was made regarding the reduction of the theatrical window in Germany from 6 to 4 months. This new rule will not apply to U.S. studio films, which will have their own rollout schedule. Rather, it will only apply to films that receive backing from the German Federal Film Board (FFA). This deal is particularly significant because most local German films or German co-productions receive FFA support and the theatrical audience in the country has significantly decreased since the beginning of the pandemic.
